Looking for a Sunni rishta: how maslak works here

Sunni families describe themselves in different ways. Some simply say Sunni; others name a maslak such as Deobandi, Barelvi or Ahl-e-Hadith. ShaddiNikah lists each of these as its own option, and that has a direct effect on which rishtas your family is shown. This guide explains how, so you can choose the settings that match what your family actually means. ShaddiNikah takes no position on any maslak.

Create AccountHow it works

How maslak is recorded

Every profile states its religion. For Muslim profiles, maslak is required, chosen from one list: Sunni, Shia, Deobandi, Barelvi, Ahl-e-Hadith, or other. Each family picks the one answer that describes it, and that answer is shown on the profile and on each suggestion card next to caste.

“Same sect only” is an exact match

If you set “same sect only” as a deal-breaker, you are shown only profiles whose maslak is exactly the same option as yours. A family that chose “Sunni” will not be shown profiles marked Deobandi, Barelvi or Ahl-e-Hadith, and a family that chose “Barelvi” will not be shown profiles marked “Sunni”.

So decide first how wide your family’s answer is. If you would welcome any Sunni family, whichever label it uses, leave the deal-breaker off and read the maslak on each profile yourself. If you want a particular maslak only, choose that maslak on your own profile and turn the deal-breaker on.

Without the deal-breaker

If “same sect only” is off, maslak does not hide anyone and does not change the order of your daily list. It is shown on every profile so your family can judge. There is no setting to prefer a maslak softly; it is either a boundary or something you read.

Other settings families pair with it

  • Religion — limits suggestions to one religion, and is never widened.
  • Hijab or beard — a boy’s family can prefer full purdah, hijab or scarf, and a girl’s family a full or short beard. Matching profiles rank higher; nobody is hidden.
  • Caste — open, preferred castes, or “same caste only”.

What is not checked

Our staff check identity, photos and age. Maslak is as each family entered it, so confirm what matters to you in conversation, as you would with any rishta. ShaddiNikah does not give religious rulings.

Questions

We are Sunni Barelvi. Which option should we choose?

That is your family’s choice. Choose “Barelvi” if you want “same sect only” to match Barelvi profiles exactly; choose “Sunni” if that is how you describe yourselves more broadly.

Will “same sect only” ever be relaxed?

No. Deal-breakers are never widened, even if it means a shorter daily list.

Does the other family’s setting affect us?

Each family’s settings decide what that family is shown. Your deal-breaker controls your list; theirs controls theirs.

Is maslak required on a profile?

Yes, for every Muslim profile. It is shown on the profile and on each suggestion card, next to caste.
